Sense of Smell

6 months, 2 weeks

From The Biology of Prenatal Development.Buy Now

Script: All components required for a functioning sense of smell are operational. Studies of premature babies reveal the ability to detect odors as early as 26 weeks after fertilization.

Placing a sweet substance in the amniotic fluid increases the rate of fetal swallowing. In contrast, decreased fetal swallowing follows the introduction of a bitter substance. Altered facial expressions often follow.

All ages referenced to fertilization, not last menstrual period. One month = 4 weeks.
