Very high power TEM of an expanded stage 3 embryo in vitro showing details of mitochondria within a trophoblast cell (original magnification x35,000). Some mitochondria are smaller and are beginning to elongate as their inner membranes form transverse cristae; others are larger and spherical and retain peripheral arch-like cristae.
