A general low-power view of the older embryo and its surrounding endometrium. The embryo is shallowly implanted, with the overlying endometrium thin, atrophic, or definitely necrotic. There is marked edema and hemorrhage in the endometrium adjacent to the embryo and early decidua developing immediately around the embryo, whereas somewhat removed from it, the endometrium is merely edematous.
